Step by Step to Greater Self-Sufficiency – with Photovoltaics and E-Mobility

9/18/2023 / Leobendorf
The Huber family has expanded their solar energy supply over several years with products and solutions from Fronius. Thanks to a PV system including a Fronius GEN24 Plus hybrid inverter, battery storage, and the Fronius Wattpilot EV charging solution, the Huber family now uses and consumes most of their solar power themselves.

For more than ten years, Tamara and Franz Huber have been living with their two children Valentin and Emma in Leobendorf, Bavaria (D), in a passive house where they feel exceptionally comfortable not only thanks to its pleasant interior climate but also because of its low energy requirements. During construction of the house, the couple ensured the use of energy-saving construction methods and renewable energies. To be able to supply their energy management with solar power, the Hubers first purchased a PV system that included a Fronius GEN24 Plus inverter.

A few years later, they purchased a battery storage system so that the family of four would have the self-generated solar power available later and could use it even when the sun was no longer shining. With Fronius, the Huber family brings 24 hours of sun into their home.

» This means we can run the washing machine or dishwasher even late at night – without a guilty conscience. We’ve produced the electricity ourselves during the day and now use it at night as well. «

From the roof to the garage: a comprehensive solution from Fronius

The next step for the Hubers was to buy an electric car, a logical consequence for them: “This was the addition for us that made sense: we have a PV system and a storage unit, so it was obvious that we should get an electric car. That's when we decided on the Fronius Wattpilot,” Tamara Huber adds. The positive experiences with Fronius from the past were decisive for this.

» The reason we chose the Fronius Wattpilot is that we are super satisfied with the storage system as well as the PV system and inverter from Fronius. Everything runs smoothly here. «

Sustainable and cost-saving, Tamara and Franz Huber now charge their e-car with their home EV charging solution. “When I charge the car with regular grid power, it costs a fraction of what I would pay for diesel. But if I now charge our e-car with self-generated PV electricity, it’s virtually free,” says Tamara Huber happily.

With their comprehensive solution, the Huber family saved a total of around EUR 2,600 in energy costs in 2022, and their carbon footprint has also been minimized more and more in recent years: in 2022, the family was able to save 3 tons of carbon emissions, and the total since 2018 has already amounted to 13 tons of carbon emissions. This equates to the enormous amount of carbon emitted by a car with an internal combustion engine after being driven for 52,120 kilometers.

Charge intelligently, save intelligently

The perfectly coordinated Fronius GEN24 Plus hybrid inverter together with BYD battery storage and the Fronius Wattpilot EV charging solution form an unbeatable team when it comes to self-consumption, leading to more and more self-sufficiency and cost minimization in the Huber family’s energy supply. “First and foremost, all the consumers in the house are supplied – that is, the heating, ventilation and all kitchen appliances,” explains Franz Huber. What solar power remains after that flows into the battery storage. When the battery is 70% full, the electric car is also charged with solar power. Only then is the remaining electricity fed into the public grid.

“The Fronius Wattpilot can also feed small amounts of electricity into a car. This is perfect because the car is charged from as little as 1,400 watts.”, says Franz Huber.

When charging with PV surplus, our intelligent electric charging solution can automatically switch between 1 and 3 phases. This way the Fronius Wattpilot reliably charges even small amounts of charging current into the e-car – and thus makes optimum use of the smallest amounts of solar power from your own PV system.

Power supply optimally distributed

When charging with the Fronius Wattpilot e-car charger, both the output of your own PV system and the energy consumed in the household are always taken into account. This reduces the connection costs to a minimum. Another advantage: up to three vehicles can be dynamically charged and controlled with our EV charging solution. This makes the Fronius Wattpilot a long-term support for the Huber family, reliably providing mobility to their family over time when a future e-car is considered for the youngest family members.

Green prosumers with solar power

The Huber family is very happy that they not only are producing solar power themselves but can also use it more and more effectively and in larger quantities. “We can do quite a lot with the sun here. This makes us independent or more self-sufficient in terms of energy,” Tamara Huber says happily. We are proud that the Huber family trusts us and our holistic energy solutions and that we can support them on every step of their personal energy transition.
